Red Bull X-Alps' Google success

ZOOOM’S GOOGLE SUCCESS STORY WITH RED BULL X-ALPS

As a full service communications agency, one of zooom’s many skill sets is that of event organization and execution. We've successfully completed eight editions of Red Bull X-Alps in the last 16 years. However, realizing a project of this magnitude presents it’s own unique set of challenges - each and every time.

At the centre of the race is our online, Live Tracking feature which streams the athlete’s progress to the viewers back home. Through this unique and advanced use experience, we’ve seen an exponential growth in followers over the years, so for Red Bull X-Alps 2017 we needed a sure-fire way to keep up with the traffic. Creating and implementing a system that follows 32 athletes across over 1100km of treacherous Alpine terrain sounds tough, right? How about doing it in just 3 months? Teaming up with Wabion, we did exactly that.

The race only goes on for two weeks, so we had to find a solution that was fast and easy to scale up, and fast and easy to scale down. Google App Engine provided us with a lot of processing power when we needed it, and we could turn it down very quickly when we didn't.

Hannes Maier, Head of Digital at zooom

Complete with 3D terrain maps, simulated flight paths and a customizable, user-friendly interface, the efficient construction and implementation of the system wasn’t our only achievement. The resulting explosion in online reach, website sessions and overall traffic was so significant that it even turned heads at Google. Impressed by our innovation and ability to activate large audiences, the tech giant decided to interview our team and feature us in a case study. They even invited us to San Francisco for a top secret project which will be revealed in the not-too-distant future.
